About the Frederick H. Hackeman Camp No. 85

The Camp is named in honor of Frederick H. Hackeman, Cpl., Co. I, 1st Illinois Light Artillery Regiment. Known as an extraordinary gunner, Cpl. Hackeman once knocked a Confederate piece off its trunnions with one well placed shot at the range of 2 miles. A native of Germany, Comrade Hackeman emigrated to the United States in 1851, and settled in Birch Creek, Menominee County. He became a prominent citizen of the county, and was active in the affairs of the Grand Army of the Republic. Upon Comrade Hackeman's death at the age of 71, the Comrades of his Post conducted his grave side service. There were over 200 of his friends and relatives in attendance, and Comrade, the Hon. Thomas Breen, who served with Comrade Hackeman in the 1st Illinois Light Artillery, offered a fitting eulogy.
