B. J. Bennett Post #71Burr Oak, Saint Joseph County, Michigan Organized August 3, 1882 This Post was named to honor Benjamin G. Bennett of Burr Oak. He enlisted in Company G, 1st Michigan Infantry as First Sergeant, for three months on April 24, 1861 at age 38. He was Mustered out at Detroit on August 7, 1861 and re-entered the service on August 24, 1861 in Company D, 11th Michigan Infantry, as Captain, at organization. He was commissioned Major on January 7, 1863. He was killed in action at Mission Ridge, Tenn. on November 25, 1863. The Post was Mustered with 27 Charter Members. The first Post Commander was S. M. Hogle who served in Company C, 1st Michigan Infantry from February 1, 1864 until June 1, 1865. The Post met at A. M. Graham's on 3rd Street. In 1883 they met at NVE Hall on the corner of 4th and Eagle. In 1889 they met at Kibbe Hall on H and Trout Street.. In 1890 they met at Smith's Hall on Second Street. In 1991 they were back at Kibbe's Hall on Front Street and their last identified meeting place was Graham's on Third Street. The last Post Commander was Dave M. Wait who served in Company C, 8th Michigan Infantry from August 15, 1861 until January 1, 1864. The final Report was filed December 31 1899 with 12 Members and a note - "Meeting on call." The Post was disbanded in June 1900.
