Dwight May Post #69Midland, Midland County, Michigan Organized June 29, 1882 This Post was named to honor Dwight May of Kalamazoo County, Michigan. He entered service in Company I, 2nd Michigan Infantry as Captain on April 22, 1861, age 38. He resigned December 2, 1861, but re-entered the service October 8, 1862 as Lt. Colonel of the 12th Michigan Infantry. He commanded the regiment from September 1863 to June 1864 and from October 1864 to May 1865. He was commissioned Colonel June 10 1865 and commanded the Post at Washington, Arkansas from June 1865 to November 1865. He was Brevet Brigadier General for faithful service during the war. Mustered out and honorably discharged at Camden, Arkansas February 1, 1866. The Post was Mustered with 32 Charter Members. The first Post Commander was D. W. Hitchcock who served in Company F, 23rd Wisconsin Infantry. The Post met at Cram's Hall on Main Street. In 1883 they met at the Court House on Main Street. In 1885 the meeting place is identified as G.A.R. Hall on Ashman Street. The Post then met at the following places on Main Street, Larkin Hall, G. A. R. Hall, City Hall, and by 1921 the indicate they "Meet on call". The last Post Commander was Charles Gunn who served in Company G, 30th Michigan Infantry from December 1, 1864 until June 1, 1865. The final Report was filed on December 31, 1925 showing four Members. The Post was disbanded in 1927.
