Shields Post #68Shelby, Oceana County, Michigan Organized June 27, 1882 There is no indication of which Shields this Post was named to honor. The Post was Mustered with 17 Charter Members. The first Post Commander was George W. Woodward who enlisted as 2nd Lieutenant in Company G, 21st Michigan Infantry on August 8, 1862. He was Promoted to Captain December 2, 1863. He was Promoted to Brevet Major for services in the campaigns in Georgia and the Carolinas. He was mustered out June 8, 1865 at Washington, D. C. The Post met at Hedges Hall, Pitts Hall, and Fireman's Hall, all on Main Street. In 1920 they met at Town Hall on Hall Street. In December 1921 they are meeting at Legion Hall. After 1925 they met at the call of the Commander. The last Post Commander was Elijah M. Holt. He enlisted in Company C, 88th Pennsylvania Veteran Volunteers March 22, 1865. He was discharged on June 30, 1865. The last Member of the Post, he died August 20, 1943. Commander Holt noted on the Report of December 31, 1935 - "I am all the boy left in this Post -88 years old. He continued to file Reports and pay per capita until the end. The Post was disbanded August 20, 1943.
