Geo. W. Anderson Post #58DeWitt, Clinton County, Michigan Organized April 25, 1882 This Post was named to Honor George W. Anderson of DE Witt. He enlisted in Company E, 23rd Michigan Infantry on August 11, 1862, age 29. He was a POW on December 15, 1863 at Cumberland Gap, Tenn. and paroled. He died as a prisoner on June 27, 1864 in Andersonville Prison, Georgia. The Post was Mustered with 15 Charter Members. The first Post Commander was N. J. Stewart who served as a wagoner in Company C, 157 New York SV from August 19, 1862 to June 1, 1865. The Post met at the Clinton House in DeWitt and the Post Hall located on Main Street, Grand River, and by December 1912 at a private house. The last Post Commander was Thomas W. Baldwin. He enlisted as Sergeant on August 20, 1862, at age 21, in Company A, 3rd New York Cavalry. He was missing on October 7, 1864 at Darbytown Road, Virginia. He was Paroled on March 2, 1865 at N. E, Ferry, North Carolina. He was mustered out on July 14, 1865 in Rochester, New York. Last Report filed by the Post was June 30 1908 noting 13 Members. The Report of December 31, 1908 makes note of - "Letter of Dec. 1908 - ‘disbanding' - No further Report. " The Post was disbanded February 24, 1909.
