Thomas Manning Post #57Marcellus, Cass County, Michigan Organized May 19, 1882 This Post was named to honor Thomas Manning of Marcellus. He enlisted in Company E, 11th Michigan Infantry on August 14, 1861, age 22. He died June 30, 1864 of wounds received in action near Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia June 29, 1864. He is buried in National Cemetery at Marietta, Georgia, Section A, Grave No. 956. The Post was Mustered with 39 Charter Members. The first Post Commander was H. J. Kellogg who served as a Hospital Steward in Company H, 152nd New York Infantry. He was discharged for disability on April 3, 1864. The Post reported meeting at a Post Hall on Dibble Street, Reed Street, Maple Street and Main Street. In 1885 they met in a School Room, no street location noted. In 1894 there were a large number of Transfers from Thomas Higgins Post 230 in Waklee, Cass County. The last Post Commander was George I. Nash who served in Company A, 1st Michigan Light Artillery enlisting as a Private on March 11, 1862. He was discharged as !st Lieutenant on July 26, 1865. The last Report was filed on December 31, 1924 with 13 Members. The Post was disbanded in 1926.
