Edward Pomeroy Post #48Jackson, Jackson County, Michigan Organized March 9, 1882 This Post is named to honor Edward Pomeroy of Jackson County. He enlisted, as first Sergeant in Company B, 1st Michigan Infantry on April 29, 1861, age 25. After the three month tour he re-entered service in Company G, 1st Michigan Infantry as First Lieutenant, august 15,1861. Commissioned Captain of Company E, on January 15, 1862. He was killed in action at Bull Run, Virginia, August 30, 1862. The Post was mustered with 32 Charter Members. The first Post Commander was William W. Van Antwerp who enlisted as 2nd Lieutenant in Company I, 4th Michigan Cavalry, August 13, 1862. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and transferred to Company C on December 18, 1862. Transferred back to Company C on January 23, 1863.On June 27 1863 he was promoted to Captain and transferred to Company G. Promoted to Brevet Major on March 2, 1865. He was discharged July 21, 1865 at Detroit, Michigan. The Post met initially at AOUM Hall on Main Street. In 1884 they meet at the G.A.R. Hall on Main Street ( Union Block). They meet at the G.A.R. Hall in the Court House (Street?) in 1896, on West Main in 1898 and the Court House (Post Room) in the County Building. The last Post Commander was John Killeen who served in Company G, 8th New York Cavalry from March 30, 1865 to June 20, 1865. He was also the last Member. Note is made that the Post Charter is held by the Pomeroy WRC #5 at Jackson, Michigan. The Post was disbanded May 25, 1944.
