H. C. Gilbert Post #47Dowagiac, Cass County, Michigan Organized March 11, 1882 This Post was named to honor Henry C. Gilbert of Coldwater. He entered service as Colonel at the organization of the 19th Michigan Infantry on August 8, 1862 at Detroit, age 44. He died September 25, 1862 at Chattanooga, Tenn. on May 24 1864 of wounds received in action at Resaca, Georgia on May 15, 1864. He is buried at Coldwater, Michigan. The Post was Mustered with 16 Charter Members. The first Post Commander was T. J. Edwards who served in Company C, 1st Michigan Infantry. In 1882 the Post met at the Odd Fellows Hall on Commercial Street. In 1884 they had moved to City Hall on Division Street. In 1889 they moved to Front Street , first to Macabee Hall, in 1890 in Pray's Hall, 1893 G. A. R. Hall and in December 1901 to Commander J. R. Edwards' office. The last Post Commander was Joseph R. Edwards who enlisted in Company A, 12th Michigan Infantry on September 27, 1861 and was discharged on January 1, 1865. The last Report was filed on June 30, 1909 showing 39 Members. The Post was disbanded on March 7, 1910.
