A. W. Allen Post #44Pokagan, Cass County, Michigan Organized February 13, 1882 The Post was probably named to honor Alonzo W. Allen of Pokagan. He enlisted in Company A, 12th Michigan Infantry on September 28, 1861 at age 22.He died of disease at Memphis, Tenn., October 25, 1863. He is buried in National Cemetery in Memphis, Tenn., Grave No. 4161. The Post was Mustered with 18 Charter Members. The first Post Commander was J. H. Bower who served in Company L, 10th Ohio Infantry. He enlisted on October 1, 1862. The Post met at the Lecture Room at the M. E. Church in Pokagon and by December 1882 at the G.A.R. Hall there. The last Post Commander was J. H. Bower. No Reports were filed after September 30, 1886 and the Post was Disbanded with 16 Members in 1886.
