Geo. G. Meade Post #36
Berrien Center, Berrien County, Michigan

Organized December 29, 1881

This Post was named to honor Major General George Gordon Meade. He was born in Cadiz, Spain while his father served as consul there. He graduated from West Point in 1835. Following some time in engineering, as a civilian, he rejoined the military in 1842 and served with some distinction in the Mexican War. He was made Brigadier General of Volunteers in 1861 at the start of the Civil War. He was severely wounded during the Seven Days Battle but soon recovered. At Antietam he commanded the Corps after General Hooker was wounded. He commanded the Army of the Potomac during the Battle of Gettysburg. He was promoted to the Major General of the Regular Army by Congress in gratitude for his service. After the war he was given command of the Division of the Atlantic, headquartered in Philadelphia. He died at the residence, presented to his wife by their fellow citizens in grateful recognition of his service, on November 6, 1872.

The Post was Mustered with 16 Charter Members.

The first Post Commander was B. H. Rutter who enlisted in Company M, 1st Michigan Cavalry on August 21, 1865 and served until September 24, 1865.

The Post met at the Grange Hall, G. A. R. Hall and Stock Co. Hall in Berrien Center. They report in June 1906 - "Have no hall to meet in."

The last Post Commander was S. L. Snaveley who served in Company C, 192nd Pennsylvania Infantry from February 13, 1865 to August 24, 1865.

The last report filed by the Post was December 31, 1917 with three Members.

The Post was disbanded November 15, 1919.
