C. O. Loomis Post #2Quincy, Branch County, Michigan Organized January 22, 1876 The Post was named to honor Cyrus O. Loomis. He entered service, at age 40, in Battery A, 1st Michigan Light Artillery as Captain, commissioned May 28, 1861. He was commissioned Colonel on October 8, 1862. He was promoted to Brevet Brigadier General U.S. Volunteers on June 20, 1865, for gallant and meritorious services. He was discharged at Detroit, Mich., July 29, 1865. He died at the National Military Asylum at Washington D.C. His body was sent to Detroit for interment. By error his body was sent to Chicago in the express car. On the return trip there was a train accident near Niles, Mich., and the express car carrying the casket caught fire and the body of General Loomis was cremated.
The Post was mustered with 14 Charter Members
Daniel W. Sawyer was the first Post Commander. He served as a 1st Lieut. of Company D, 1st Michigan Light Artillery.
The Post was disbanded in 1929. The last Commander was Harvey J. Wood.
