Edwin Colwell Post #23
Bloomingdale, Van Buren County, Michigan

Organized August 29, 1881

The Application for Charter requests the name Loomis for this Post. The Post was named for Edwin A. Colwell of Van Buren County enlisted as a Private in Company A, 3rd Michigan Cavalry on September 5, 1861 at the age of 25. He served with the 9th Illinois Cavalry from January 31, 1864 to May 30, 1864. He was discharged at the end of his term in Brownsville, Arkansas (Texas?) on October 24, 1864.

The Reports from 1881 are missing, or were not filed, thus we have no indication of the Charter Members. The names of those men listed on the Application for Charter have been added to the Member data base listing.

The first Post Commander (reported 1882) was Daniel Fow. He enlisted as a Private in Company E, 23rd Pennsylvania Infantry on April 21, 1861. He was mustered out July 31, 1861.He re-enlisted in Company E, 23rd Pennsylvania Infantry on August 14, 1861 and was transferred to the 82nd Pennsylvania Infantry on September 14, 1864.

With regard to meetings it is noted; “The Post meets the Saturday after the full moon.” The only meeting place indicated in Reports is the Odd Fellows Hall in Bloomfield.

The last Post Commander was Emmit Ward who served as a Private in Company A, 3rd Michigan Cavalry. He enlisted on August 17, 1863, at age 17, and was discharged on February 12, 1866 in Brownsville, Texas. He Transferred from Post 56 in December 1890.

The last report filed for this Post was December 31, 1920 and showed 13 active Members. The Post was disbanded on May 18, 1921.
