Ellsworth Post #20Hartford, Van Buren County, Michigan Organized June 14, 1881 There were 35 men by the name of Ellsworth, from Michigan, who served during the war. There is no indication which of these men may have been honored by the Post.
The Post was mustered with 27 Charter Members.
The first Post Commander was William Bennett who enlisted October 1, 1864 as Sergeant in Company I, 19 Ohio Infantry. He was discharged as a 1st Lieutenant of Company I, 19 Ohio Infantry on October 24, 1865. He died January 10, 1921.
The Post met, on Main Street, in a variety of locations or building identifications noted as K of P. Hall in June of 1881, by September of that year as “Their Hall”, Good Fellows Hall, IOOF Hall, Macabee Hall in 1911 (noted as “corner of Main and Maple”), and Town Hall in 1922.
On the Report of March 31, 1884 the death of Comrade Simeon Meacham is reported with the note that the cause of his death was “Blood poisoning from wound rec. at Winchester, W.V. Sept. 19, 1864.” He had served as a Sergeant in Company K, 1st Michigan Cavalry from November 23, 1863 to May 18, 1865.
The last Post Commander was John M. Carter who served as a Private in Company E, 10th New York Heavy Artillery from September 18, 1862 until July 14, 1865. Commander Carter was first elected to this office in 1918. He died July 2, 1926.
The last Report for this Post was filed December 31, 1927 and did not list a Post Commander. James Weston, who served as a Private in Company D, 2nd Michigan Infantry was listed as the Senior Vice Commander, a post he held for the prior five years.
The Post was dropped from the 1932 Journal on December 8, 1931
